課程概述

This course explores a biosemiotic approach to art, our body and mind. It engages with the intrigue of meaning seeking and interpreting that has been regarded as an essential point of contact between various areas of study such as anthropology, psychology, philosophy, art history, and literary theory. To begin with, (1) the first part of the course focuses on discovering how we may become ideal interpreters by way of exerting our intuition, hypothetical thinking, and abductive reasoning. It aims to draw parallels between animals and humans in terms of sign consciousness and cognitive functions. (2) The second part continues to enlarge on the significance of unifying animal and human traits for the benefit of forming wider horizons or a mental network that serves to instigate closer examinations of links between human and non-human entities. (3) The last part draws on the concept of mood or atmosphere shared by aesthetics, art history, and literary theory. It discusses the benefits of adopting distant views in our appreciation of artworks and literature. All in all, this course fosters the ethics and approaches of dealing with other minds or entities with a view to better surviving the world of opinions in the arts and humanities.

This course aims to shed light on certain aspects of theory making: (1) how we can make good use of the changing, non-adaptive and non-exclusive features of syntagmatic combinations so as to be creative with our interpretations; (2) how our unique interpretations may serve to benefit the community in forming certain disciplines or paradigms; (3) how we can work out various sorts of play scenarios while engaging in the process of truth or meaning seeking.
